Collaborative Therapy for Couples

When working with couples it is often extremely helpful for one or both partners to have individual therapy at the same time, as the couples therapy moves forward most effectively with greater understanding of the individual issues and how they impact the relationship. To minimize the time and cost needed for this to work, I have created a team approach with my husband, Niall Geoghegan, Psy.D, a licensed psychologist. Together we review the needs of the couple and create a package including both couples therapy and individual therapy suited to your time and financial needs. We usually agree on a certain number of sessions per month and then determine which combination of couples versus individual therapy will be best for you. This can be flexible and adjusted as needed during the course of therapy. I often work with the couple while Niall works with one or both of the partners individually and we discuss collaboratively so that you benefit from our combined skill set. We have been able to help many couples resolve their issues efficiently and effectively using this team approach. Please contact either of us to learn more about this option.

Premarital or Pre-Commitment Counseling

Getting married or making a lifetime commitment to your partner will be one of the most significant rites of passage in your life. Regardless of how long you have been together, it will signify a move from one phase of life to the next. It is an exciting time but can also bring up challenges and powerful emotions. I offer supportive pre-marital counseling sessions where we will discuss any issues, concerns, fears, hopes and intentions you have.

Supervision

I am currently a supervisor at JFK University’s Center for Holistic Counseling in Oakland, where I mentor beginning therapists working with their first clients. I help them manage and maintain caseloads, address issues in the therapeutic relationship and explore their own personal experience as a new therapist. My goal is to offer them what I have learned in this profession while helping them find and express their own unique style of doing this work.

In my private practice I also supervise Post-Masters interns who are accumulating hours towards licensure. In this setting we go deeper into their skill set and hone in on how to maximize the effectiveness of therapy. We discuss the ins and outs of private practice, including finances, record keeping, and ethical issues.  I am also available for ongoing consultation post licensure.
